Our new Masala Simmer Sauce!

Happy October, {{first_name | friend}}!

Five years ago this October, we launched our first three masalas under the name of my late husband, Floyd Cardoz. It's always been hard for me to talk about what brought our company into existence. Because while our origin story is full of love and gratitude, it started with grief.

So while I’m so excited to share new spice tips, recipes, and an exciting product launch announcement today, I’ve also taken time to pen reflections about lost dreams, grief, collaboration, and community in my October letter to newsletter subscribers.

Spice of October

Cloud Forest Cardamom

Cardamom is a truly underused spice—its aroma alone is worthy of habitual application! It offers an ethereal fragrance blending fresh fruit, herbs, and green growing things. We often crush whole cardamom pods in our cookbook recipes. But you can also buy seeds already removed from the pods in grinder from Burlap & Barrel, which makes it even easier to incorporate into dishes!

3 easy ways to use cardamom today:

  1. Grind & combine with ginger, cinnamon, and Garam Masala for homemade granola or apple sauce teeming with fall flavors.

  2. Add a pinch to your morning tea to awaken your taste buds & invigorate your mind.

  3. Make a fragrant, flavorful chicken and vegetable stew with only crushed cardamom pods and black pepper.

Today we welcome…

Our new Masala Simmer Sauce!

I’ve been wanting to create masala-infused sauces for years. So I’m thrilled to share that we’ve collaborated with Matriark Foods—a company reducing food waste by transforming surplus ingredients into incredible products—and our friends at Burlap & Barrel on a limited-edition Masala Simmer Sauce!

Our Masala Simmer Sauce starts with a base of Matriark’s rich, tangy Upcycled Tomato Passata. Then, we’ve infused it with a vibrant blend of my favorite Burlap & Barrel spices, including fragrant coriander, tangy mango powder, bracing garlic, bright ginger, warming cumin, and my sweetly aromatic Garam Masala.

It’s a truly versatile flavoring tool that quickly infuses dishes with sweet, umami richness.

Try it in the recipe below—and stay tuned for many more!
