Masala Simmer Sauce bolognese
Like most parents, I’ve been making a meat sauce for my family for years.
But the majority of the time, I only used salt and pepper to season the sauce, as I didn’t want it to be too strong or spicy for my young sons as they grew up. My late husband, Floyd, and I would then add crushed pepper to our plates for the kick we adults needed.
Today, my new Masala Simmer Sauce elevates this classic meat sauce, expanding it from two flavor notes to a whole range that makes my mouth so happy!
Busy parents (and busy people, in general) will also appreciate how fast this sauce comes together. It doesn’t require that you stand near the stove while tomatoes and spices cook down together, because the Masala Simmer Sauce has already done that! So this recipe can help you get dinner on the table in under 30 minutes, saving you time in the kitchen without compromising on flavor.
Simply stir it into browned meat and onions for a rich meat sauce with subtle heat and warm spices. It tastes amazing over pasta or rice, scooped up with parathas, in a Sloppy Joe or sub, as a filling for meat pastries, and so much more.
Masala Simmer Sauce Bolognese
Course: Main
Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 15-20 minutes
Masalas: Masala Simmer Sauce
Barkha’s heat index: 2 (from 1-5, with 5 being only moderately spicy)
Ingredients
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 cup finely chopped onions
1 Tbsp garlic, finely chopped (or garlic paste)
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 8-oz jar of Masala Simmer Sauce
½ tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp salt, plus more to taste
1 tsp sugar
8-10 fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped
Grated parmesan cheese (optional)
Method
Set a large sauté pan or medium heavy-bottomed pot on medium heat. Add the oil and warm it until it shimmers. Add the garlic and gently fry for about 1 minute.
Stir in the chopped onions and cook, uncovered, until a light translucent brown—3-4 minutes.
Add the ground beef and sear—about 5-6 minutes.
Reduce the heat to low. Add the Masala Simmer Sauce, ½ tsp of black pepper, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tsp sugar. Fill the Simmer Sauce jar with water, shake, and stir in. Simmer for about 8-10 minutes.
Taste, and add more salt if desired. Just before serving, stir in half of the chopped basil leaves.
To serve, scoop the sauce over pasta or rice, or onto rolls for Sloppy Joes. Top with the remaining fresh basil leaves and grated parmesan cheese (if desired).
